Can Social Media Cause Anxiety? There’s no doubt that social media can be a great tool for connecting with friends and family, sharing news and experiences, and building relationships. But what about when social media starts to cause anxiety? For some people, using social media can feel like an endless cycle of comparing themselves to others, feeling left out or ignored, or experiencing overwhelming FOMO (fear of missing out). Social Media could be causing more anxiety than you realize-and not just in kids either; adults can suffer too if we don’t take steps towards calming down our feeds.

 

Social media can be addictive

 

It’s no secret that social media can be addictive. Some have withdrawal symptoms when they are removed from their devices for a period of time. And for many people, the constant connectedness it provides can create a sense of anxiety. In fact, a study published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking found that people who use social media more often are more likely to report feeling symptoms of anxiety. 

 

What to do if social media gives you anxiety?

 

If you’re struggling with social media-related anxiety or know someone who is, Here are five tips on how you could reduce these downsides.

 

1) Create your own network of supportive friendships rather than following others’ feeds all day; 

 

2) Be mindful about what time periods that you are social networking (for example no e-mailing or texting after 9 p.m.)

 

 3 ) Take care when sharing personal information because this may not be wise to broadcast this to all your connections.

 

 4 ). Try blocking certain sites from viewing if you find them disrupting your work life 

 

 5) Turn off notifications so you can avoid distractions during the day and focus on what matters most.

 

Put down your device and enjoy life with others in person every once in a while!
